In rebel-held 'Free Syria,' regime planes still terrorize

The mood was triumphant today as Al-Bab residents emptied from mosques and marched to the city's Freedom Square to call for the end of President Bashar al-Assad's regime. Children waved an oversized Syrian flag, an activist rallied the crowd with a microphone, and several protesters broke into small dance circles.

For a brief time, an end to the war felt almost imminent in this city residents now describe as part of ?Free Syria."

Since late July, Al-Bab has been part of a small region of Syria that?s managed to break free from the control of Mr. Assad and his Army. Situated about 25 miles northeast of Aleppo and the frontlines of the civil war, the city is deep inside opposition-controlled territory where there are no traces of the regime or the Army.

The crowd's moment of triumph, however, was short-lived.

Over the shouts and songs, demonstrators heard the sound of a Syrian jet approaching. As the crowd scattered, the jet circled, went into a dive, and released a bomb where the demonstration had been just moments ago. In the hour that followed, it strafed the city as members of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) fired back with heavy machines unlikely to down the plane.

When the jet finally disappeared into the cloud cover, it left behind seven people dead and dozens injured, according to FSA officials. Shopkeepers returned to the few stores that had yet to indefinitely close for business and the city reluctantly returned to what?s left of normal life.

Bombings and jet attacks have become a regular occurrence in towns like Al-Bab that are well inside FSA-controlled parts of Syria. Even if opposition forces say they feel strong enough to hold the cities in the face of Assad?s ground forces, they say it?s impossible to create any safe or truly independent areas as long as the Syrian government has jets and artillery. Incidents like today's illustrate why they are demanding a no-fly zone in Syria.

?When the jets come we don't know what to do,? says an FSA fighter who, like most opposition supporters in Al-Bab, asked for security reasons to be referred to only by his nickname, Abu Abdu.

Few residents fear the return of the Assad Army, but the persistent bombing has forced many into exile. Others have shuttered their business or lost their jobs because of the constant threat of the Assad regime?s Air Force.

Among the international community, France has aggressively called for a no-fly zone over Syria, and the US and Turkey have also discussed the possibility, but no action has been taken. Russia and China are expected to veto any such measures if brought before the United Nations Security Council.

Turkey has led the lobbying for the creation of a safe zone along the border where refugees could be protected without fleeing to neighboring countries. A no-fly zone would likely be required to create such an area.

RELATED ? Why no safe zone in Syria, yet? Five complications

The FSA lacks anti-air weapons and has little recourse against the Syrian regime planes and helicopters, aside from heavy machine guns, which are largely inadequate as anti-air weapons.

?The FSA cannot protect us against the airplanes because they have only small weapons,? says Abu Mohammad, a resident of Al-Bab, who owns a mobile phone shop that he shuttered due to ongoing insecurity. ?We are very scared when the planes come but after they leave we try to go back to our normal life, but there are no jobs because many of the shops and businesses have closed.?

About two months ago, the chicken farm where Abdul Karis worked went out of business after food shortages forced them to eat all the chickens.

?Now we are just sitting in the streets, there is no work, and the jets come here to attack us,? he says.

Amid the uncertainty, opposition groups have worked to establish a temporary government to bring some modicum of order to the city. Volunteers run everything from the local courthouse to the local hospital, but living under the constant threat of bombardment, they often struggle to provide services for the population, especially the hospital, which doctors say has been targeted by aerial attacks.

?They bombed our hospital so many times we had to move it to a secret location in a new building,? says Abu Adeb, a doctor in Al-Bab. He adds that the hospital also faces a shortage of critical medicines like antibiotics.

Still, many residents say that while the bombings remain a regular source of terror, the attacks have only strengthened their resolve to continue resisting the Assad government. Shortly after jets bombed today's demonstration, a small group of activists gathered on a hill overlooking the city, chanting antiregime slogans.

?Every time we are bombed, it increases our confidence," says Mahmoud Akel, a volunteer judge in the opposition?s transitional government. "It makes us want to work harder to destroy this regime.?

Beats is building its own smartphone, TV and iTunes-killer to compete directly with Apple

Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre?s company has really taken off since launching the?original?Beats by Dr. Dre headphones. BGR has learned that while music is still at the core of Beats, the company is about to make some aggressive expansions into categories currently dominated by consumer electronics giants. First off, after HTC (2498) invested $300 million in Beats ? which was a terrible idea ? and then sold back half its stake ? which was a less terrible idea ? Beats is ready to make its own smartphone.

We have learned from a trusted source that while HTC will manufacture the handset, there will be no HTC branding on this device and it will run Android with a custom UI designed exclusively for Beats smartphones. This ?will be a truly Beats phone,? our source said.

A smartphone is just the beginning, however. Beats is also apparently set on launching a TV, though the company understands the low margins are in the TV market and will be partnering with a?manufacturer?like Samsung (005930) to introduce a ?TV with Beats connect.? The purpose, we?re told, is to make a push to create an Apple-like experience that extends from a phone to a TV to a tablet to a laptop, much in the same way Apple (AAPL) does with Apple TV, AirPlay and iTunes.

Here is where this gets incredibly interesting, though. In addition to a smartphone and a TV set, our source has informed us that Beats is creating an iTunes-like service code-named Daisy, and it will also feature a subscription-based model for music streaming.

Beats By Dr. Dre did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Samsung and HTC also declined to comment.

Beats wants to own the entire experience, and you can bet that the company won?t have an issue getting record labels on board. The concept is to utilize low-power technology like a WiGig chip to be able to share all of your content on all of your Beats devices with each other, without additional boxes or components.

We?ll have more on Beats?s internal plans in the coming days.

Is There A Bustle In Your Hedgerow? Maybe You ... - Hypnosis 101

What Is Cognitive Priming & Why Is It So Important?

Take Me To Your Leader

Wikipedia defines priming as an implicit memory effect in which exposure to a stimulus influences a response to a later stimulus.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priming_(psychology)

Now, that?s a technical definition of a specific kind of priming.

The Basic Idea Is That We Introduce Something To A Person?s Mind That Influences Them Later

Think hypnotic suggestion?or reframing from NLP. That?s the basic idea, right? We seek to influence people?whether it?s to stop a bad habit or start a good one. We might help someone feel better about themselves or turn down?the level of pain from an?illness. In all those cases, we?re introducing something to their mind that influences them later.

It?s?Raining?Cats & Dogs: Examples Of Basic Priming

In psychology, priming is often associated with memory. For instance, If I write the sentence, ?The frog lay on the log in the bog, barely seen through the fog,? and then ask you to quickly think of an animal that people might keep as a pet, you?d likely say ?Dog.?

Why? because all those words rhyme with dog and the rhymes activate that part of your mind?making thinking of ?dog? easier, quicker and more convenient.

If I write, ?The scientist woke up, yawned, took a good long stretch, drank his milk and sat down to play with the string theory ideas he?d been working on,? and then asked you to think of an animal that people might keep as a pet, you?d be more likely to say ?Cat.?

Why? Because yawning, stretching, drinking milk and playing with string in combination are more likely associated with a cat.

Derren Brown Controls Minds

Here?s an example of priming that gets a lot of people to think of a specific?card. When it works, it can seem like telepathy. In other words, it gets some people to?attach?a meaning (ESP) that isn?t there.

Pay attention now.

It?s not going to work every time of course. People have different associations, are paying attention to different things and may have different things on their mind. But the tendency will be there.

Our Beliefs Prime Us

When we help someone create a belief, we prime them across a wide range of contexts. We see what we believe and if we create a belief in someone, it controls what they sense. Beliefs can make you see, hear and feel things that aren?t actually there. They can make you think patterns exist when they really don?t exist.

For instance, if your mother told you you were clumsy a few dozen times when you were young, you might build that as a belief. It then would become easier for you to find examples of being clumsy. When you tripped, you might connect it to that belief and see it as proof that mom was right. Now it?s a pattern?regardless of whether you trip more than average or not.

If you hadn?t been primed that way, you might simply think, ?I tripped.?

More Positive Priming

Of course, we can prime the other way ?round too. I read a quote the other day, ?Failure is an inevitable part of creating success.? (Andrea Hess)

I?d just had a friend?disappoint?me deeply. I began to see that ?failure? as part of the process of defining more clearly who I wanted to do business with. It was part of my road to being more successful?on my terms!

But Here?s What Chaps My Hide?

There?s a hypnotherapy instructor who has been priming in what I believe is an extremely harmful fashion. Here?s the story as I heard it (second-hand).

She did a demonstration in front of the group with a young woman. Let?s call her ?Jane.? Jane said she wanted to work on a couple of issues and the hypnosis instructor almost immediately came to the conclusion that the problems were caused by demonic possession or ?entity attachments.? She then did a quick process to get the demon or attachment out and then Jane went back to her place in the class.

The instructor then went on to explain that most of people?s problems were caused by demonic possession, entity attachments or alien abductions.

Well, a friend of mine happened to talk to Jane. Jane asked her, ?Do you really think I?m possessed by demons??

That?s priming. If she buys in to that story, whenever she feels a conflict, has a problem in life or simply can?t break a habit on her own, she may think she?s possessed by a demon or was abducted by aliens or has some sort of evil, or at least non-benign spiritual attachment.

I doubt that?s a healthy outlook too have.

Now That?s Negative Priming!

I personally don?t believe in spirit?possession?or alien abduction but regardless of whether or not you do, it?s not wise to make it up and theorize that most of our problems are due to those factors!

Just in case you think you can?t be fooled by this type of nonsense, we all can be. When primed, we can all sense things that aren?t actually there. It gives you a good idea of how these things get started.

I Guarantee You?ll Hear Something That?s Not There

Here?s a remarkable example. I guarantee you, by the end 2 minutes in to the video (that?s all you?ll need to watch), you?ll be hearing things that aren?t there.

Listen carefully to what you hear as the song is being played backward. Then again while being primed.

What To Do?

Back to the woman who?s teaching spirit possession and entity attachment as the basis for most of our problems. What do you think I should do about it, if anything? Personally, I don?t see myself as the arbiter of all things hypnosis. Surely, I?m wrong about something :-) . I also believe strongly in the right of people to believe what they want, think what they want and have any set of religious beliefs (or lack of religious beliefs) they want, as long as they don?t impose them on me.

On the other hand, I think harm is being done to innocent people by teaching them hypnosis in this way.

Suggestions? What do you think?

Enjoy,

Keith

Chris Christie?s complete RNC speech

Chris Christie's keynote speech at the Republican National Convention (as prepared for delivery):

This stage and this moment are very improbable for me.

A New Jersey Republican delivering the keynote address to our national convention, from a state with 700,000 more Democrats than Republicans.

A New Jersey Republican stands before you tonight.

Proud of my party, proud of my state and proud of my country.

I am the son of an Irish father and a Sicilian mother.

My Dad, who I am blessed to have with me here tonight, is gregarious, outgoing and loveable.

My Mom, who I lost 8 years ago, was the enforcer. She made sure we all knew who set the rules.

In the automobile of life, Dad was just a passenger. Mom was the driver.

They both lived hard lives. Dad grew up in poverty. After returning from Army service, he worked at the Breyers Ice Cream plant in the 1950s. With that job and the G.I. bill he put himself through Rutgers University at night to become the first in his family to earn a college degree. Our first family picture was on his graduation day, with Mom beaming next to him, six months pregnant with me.

Mom also came from nothing. She was raised by a single mother who took three buses to get to work every day. And mom spent the time she was supposed to be a kid actually raising children ? her two younger siblings. She was tough as nails and didn't suffer fools at all. The truth was she couldn't afford to. She spoke the truth ? bluntly, directly and without much varnish.

I am her son.

I was her son as I listened to "Darkness on the Edge of Town" with my high school friends on the Jersey Shore.

I was her son as I moved into a studio apartment with Mary Pat to start a marriage that is now 26 years old.

I was her son as I coached our sons Andrew and Patrick on the fields of Mendham, and as I watched with pride as our daughters Sarah and Bridget marched with their soccer teams in the Labor Day parade.

And I am still her son today, as Governor, following the rules she taught me: to speak from the heart and to fight for your principles. She never thought you get extra credit for just speaking the truth.

The greatest lesson Mom ever taught me, though, was this one: she told me there would be times in your life when you have to choose between being loved and being respected. She said to always pick being respected, that love without respect was always fleeting -- but that respect could grow into real, lasting love.

Now, of course, she was talking about women.

But I have learned over time that it applies just as much to leadership. In fact, I think that advice applies to America today more than ever.

I believe we have become paralyzed by our desire to be loved.

Our founding fathers had the wisdom to know that social acceptance and popularity is fleeting and that this country's principles needed to be rooted in strengths greater than the passions and emotions of the times.

Our leaders today have decided it is more important to be popular, to do what is easy and say "yes," rather than to say no when "no" is what's required.

In recent years, we as a country have too often chosen the same path.

It's been easy for our leaders to say not us, and not now, in taking on the tough issues. And we've stood silently by and let them get away with it.

But tonight, I say enough.

I say, together, let's make a much different choice. Tonight, we are speaking up for ourselves and stepping up.

We are beginning to do what is right and what is necessary to make our country great again.

We are demanding that our leaders stop tearing each other down, and work together to take action on the big things facing America.

Tonight, we choose respect over love.

We are not afraid. We are taking our country back.

We are the great grandchildren of men and women who broke their backs in the name of American ingenuity; the grandchildren of the Greatest Generation; the sons and daughters of immigrants; the brothers and sisters of everyday heroes; the neighbors of entrepreneurs and firefighters, teachers and farmers, veterans and factory workers and everyone in-between who shows up not just on the big days or the good days, but on the bad days and on the hard days.

Each and every day. All 365 of them.

We are the United States of America.

Now we must lead the way our citizens live. To lead as my mother insisted I live, not by avoiding truths, especially the hard ones, but by facing up to them and being the better for it.

We cannot afford to do anything less.

I know because this was the challenge in New Jersey.

When I came into office, I could continue on the same path that led to wealth, jobs and people leaving the state or I could do the job the people elected me to do ? to do the big things.

There were those who said it couldn't be done. The problems were too big, too politically charged, too broken to fix. But we were on a path we could no longer afford to follow.

They said it was impossible to cut taxes in a state where taxes were raised 115 times in eight years. That it was impossible to balance a budget at the same time, with an $11 billion deficit. Three years later, we have three balanced budgets with lower taxes.

We did it.

They said it was impossible to touch the third rail of politics. To take on the public sector unions and to reform a pension and health benefit system that was headed to bankruptcy.

With bipartisan leadership we saved taxpayers $132 billion over 30 years and saved retirees their pension.

We did it.

They said it was impossible to speak the truth to the teachers union. They were just too powerful. Real teacher tenure reform that demands accountability and ends the guarantee of a job for life regardless of performance would never happen.

For the first time in 100 years with bipartisan support, we did it.

The disciples of yesterday's politics underestimated the will of the people. They assumed our people were selfish; that when told of the difficult problems, tough choices and complicated solutions, they would simply turn their backs, that they would decide it was every man for himself.

Instead, the people of New Jersey stepped up and shared in the sacrifice.

They rewarded politicians who led instead of politicians who pandered.

We shouldn't be surprised.

We've never been a country to shy away from the truth. History shows that we stand up when it counts and it's this quality that has defined our character and our significance in the world.

I know this simple truth and I'm not afraid to say it: our ideas are right for America and their ideas have failed America.

Let's be clear with the American people tonight. Here's what we believe as Republicans and what they believe as Democrats.

We believe in telling hard working families the truth about our country's fiscal realities. Telling them what they already know ? the math of federal spending doesn't add up.

With $5 trillion in debt added over the last four years, we have no other option but to make the hard choices, cut federal spending and fundamentally reduce the size of government.

They believe that the American people don't want to hear the truth about the extent of our fiscal difficulties and need to be coddled by big government.

They believe the American people are content to live the lie with them.

We believe in telling seniors the truth about our overburdened entitlements.

We know seniors not only want these programs to survive, but they just as badly want them secured for their grandchildren.

Seniors are not selfish.

They believe seniors will always put themselves ahead of their grandchildren. So they prey on their vulnerabilities and scare them with misinformation for the cynical purpose of winning the next election.

Their plan: whistle a happy tune while driving us off the fiscal cliff, as long as they are behind the wheel of power.

We believe that the majority of teachers in America know our system must be reformed to put students first so that America can compete.

Teachers don't teach to become rich or famous. They teach because they love children.

We believe that we should honor and reward the good ones while doing what's best for our nation's future ? demanding accountability, higher standards and the best teacher in every classroom.

They believe the educational establishment will always put themselves ahead of children. That self-interest trumps common sense.

They believe in pitting unions against teachers, educators against parents, and lobbyists against children.

They believe in teacher's unions.

We believe in teachers.

We believe that if we tell the people the truth they will act bigger than the pettiness of Washington, D.C.

We believe it's possible to forge bipartisan compromise and stand up for conservative principles.

It's the power of our ideas, not of our rhetoric, that attracts people to our Party.

We win when we make it about what needs to be done; we lose when we play along with their game of scaring and dividing.

For make no mistake, the problems are too big to let the American people lose ? the slowest economic recovery in decades, a spiraling out of control deficit, an education system that's failing to compete in the world.

It doesn't matter how we got here. There is enough blame to go around.

What matters now is what we do.

I know we can fix our problems.

When there are people in the room who care more about doing the job they were elected to do than worrying about winning re-election, it's possible to work together, achieve principled compromise and get results.

The people have no patience for any other way.

It's simple.

We need politicians to care more about doing something and less about being something.

Believe me, if we can do this in a blue state with a conservative Republican Governor, Washington is out of excuses.

Leadership delivers.

Leadership counts.

Leadership matters.

We have this leader for America.

We have a nominee who will tell us the truth and who will lead with conviction. And now he has a running mate who will do the same.

We have Governor Mitt Romney and Congressman Paul Ryan, and we must make them our next President and Vice President.

Mitt Romney will tell us the hard truths we need to hear to put us back on the path to growth and create good paying private sector jobs again in America.

Mitt Romney will tell us the hard truths we need to hear to end the torrent of debt that is compromising our future and burying our economy.

Mitt Romney will tell us the hard truths we need to hear to end the debacle of putting the world's greatest health care system in the hands of federal bureaucrats and putting those bureaucrats between an American citizen and her doctor.

We ended an era of absentee leadership without purpose or principle in New Jersey.

It's time to end this era of absentee leadership in the Oval Office and send real leaders to the White House.

America needs Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan and we need them right now.

There is doubt and fear for our future in every corner of our country.

These feelings are real.

This moment is real.

It's a moment like this where some skeptics wonder if American greatness is over.

How those who have come before us had the spirit and tenacity to lead America to a new era of greatness in the face of challenge.

Not to look around and say "not me," but to say, "YES, ME."

I have an answer tonight for the skeptics and the naysayers, the dividers and the defenders of the status quo.

I have faith in us.

I know we can be the men and women our country calls on us to be.

I believe in America and her history.

There's only one thing missing now. Leadership. It takes leadership that you don't get from reading a poll.

You see, Mr. President ? real leaders don't follow polls. Real leaders change polls.

That's what we need to do now.

Change polls through the power of our principles.

Change polls through the strength of our convictions.

Tonight, our duty is to tell the American people the truth.

Our problems are big and the solutions will not be painless. We all must share in the sacrifice. Any leader that tells us differently is simply not telling the truth.

I think tonight of the Greatest Generation.

We look back and marvel at their courage ? overcoming the Great Depression, fighting Nazi tyranny, standing up for freedom around the world.

Now it's our time to answer history's call.

For make no mistake, every generation will be judged and so will we.

What will our children and grandchildren say of us? Will they say we buried our heads in the sand, we assuaged ourselves with the creature comforts we've acquired, that our problems were too big and we were too small, that someone else should make a difference because we can't?

Or will they say we stood up and made the tough choices needed to preserve our way of life?

I don't know about you, but I don't want my children and grandchildren to have to read in a history book what it was like to live in an American Century.

I don't want their only inheritance to be an enormous government that has overtaxed, overspent and over-borrowed a great people into second-class citizenship.

I want them to live in a second American Century.

A second American Century of strong economic growth where those who are willing to work hard will have good paying jobs to support their families and reach their dreams.

A second American Century where real American exceptionalism is not a political punch line, but is evident to everyone in the world just by watching the way our government conducts its business and everyday Americans live their lives.

A second American Century where our military is strong, our values are sure, our work ethic is unmatched and our Constitution remains a model for anyone in the world struggling for liberty.

Let us choose a path that will be remembered for generations to come. Standing strong for freedom will make the next century as great an American century as the last one.

This is the American way.

We have never been victims of destiny.

We have always been masters of our own.

I won't be part of the generation that fails that test and neither will you.

It's now time to stand up. There's no time left to waste.

If you're willing to stand up with me for America's future, I will stand up with you.

If you're willing to fight with me for Mitt Romney, I will fight with you.

If you're willing to hear the truth about the hard road ahead, and the rewards for America that truth will bear, I'm here to begin with you this new era of truth-telling.

Tonight, we choose the path that has always defined our nation's history.

Tonight, we finally and firmly answer the call that so many generations have had the courage to answer before us.

Tonight, we stand up for Mitt Romney as the next President of the United States.

And, together, we stand up once again for American greatness.

Nevertheless you need to comprehend that most of these rumors are started by people who want you to purchase their program for making money online. The goal is to convince folks that only their product is going to have the ability to help them earn any kind of money on the internet. Nevertheless there?s still money to be made by selling ebooks and in this post we will fully explain why this is. Adam Linkenauger creates some good digital books relating to vertical jump and Stansberry Research features excellent investments information products.

The very first thing you should understand would be the fact that folks are constantly searching for information on all different types of subjects. Of course, if the information and knowledge being provided is valuable individuals are willing to pay for it in order to learn what they need to know. If you have ever been in a traditional bookstore I am sure you have noticed that they dedicate an entire section to how-to books, this is because information does have a value to it. Whenever you have information that individuals want you are going to find that there is going to always be men and women willing to pay for it.

I should also point out that selling an e-book is a thing that can be started with an incredibly small amount of money, large investments aren?t required. One thing you?re going to have to spend some time on is actually generating the e-book you?re looking to sell, and making sure you are providing information that men and women actually want. The information you put in your e-book should not be a thing that can be found everywhere online for free, it ought to be unique information that is valuable. By not doing this you are going to see that you will probably not find success in your attempt to make cash with E-books.

There?s additionally going to be a small monetary investment required in relation to selling your e-book throughout the Internet. In fact the single thing you are definitely going to have to pay for is web hosting and a domain name to be able to build your website on. If you are new to the Internet you might find that you do not understand how to actually build a web site, and I should point out that there are businesses out there that will build a web site for you. If you have to outsource your site building to a company or an individual you need to have the ability to find a reasonable person to do this for reasonable price.

With regards to getting individuals to come to your web site in order to buy your e-book you are going to need to market your website. Advertising your website maybe another investment you are going to need to make or you are able to simply try and look for free strategies for marketing. One of the greatest techniques for getting targeted folks to your internet site to be able to purchase your e-book is to use a program like google Adsense. UN official says Somalia transition is too slow

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? The U.N. representative to Somalia said he is "deeply concerned by the ongoing delays" in choosing all the 275 members of parliament who will select a new Somali president.

Somali elders must select the legislators ahead of the planned election on Aug. 28 of a speaker and a deputy, U.N. Special Representative Augustine Mahiga said on Saturday.

Mahiga said there was no "time for delay," and urged the technical committee and elders compiling the list of parliamentarians to "continue working together in a spirit of mutual trust and flexibility to fulfill their responsibilities as defined in the protocols."

In an exercise praised by the U.N. as a "watershed moment" in Somalia's road to peace and stability, 215 Somali lawmakers were sworn in on Aug. 20, the day the mandate of Somalia's eight-year-old caretaker government expired. It also was the day a new president was to be selected, but those hopes were dashed by political bickering, seat-buying schemes and threats of violence.

Somalia's intricate clan politics and loyalties must be navigated in the selection of the country's next leaders. A clan that wins the post of speaker, for example, is not eligible to get the presidency. Somali elders are tasked with naming a full parliament, since a general election is impossible because of the country's chronic insecurity.

The current political process has been undemocratic, "with unprecedented levels of political interference, corruption and intimidation," according to the International Crisis Group.

It remains unclear when a new president will be sworn in. Nick Birnback, a spokesman for the U.N. mission to Somalia, said last week that this would happen later in August or in early September. But the International Crisis Group predicted that it would not be until October that a full government is seated. After the president is elected, he must appoint a prime minister who then assembles a Cabinet.

Somalia, which has lacked a stable government since 1991, has seen improved stability recently as government forces and African Union troops pushed the al-Shabab militants out of the capital Mogadishu in August 2011. Although there is the occasional terrorist attack, the city is returning to life.

A Blog About Food: Crockpot Turkey White Bean Pumpkin Chili

Fall is quickly approaching (yay!), which means cooler weather, busier schedules, and more PUMPKIN in our diets.? At least that's what it means in our house.

I love pumpkin season.? I'm a bit of a pumpkin hoarder actually.? The second I see pumpkin on the shelves, I leave with half a cart load.? Consequently I've sat through a few interventions from my husband on the matter.

Most pumpkin recipes are things you're pulling out of the oven, things like cookies, muffins and pies.? This recipe doesn't require quite as much work, and also doesn't come with as much guilt either.

This is a Skinny Taste recipe that you make in the crockpot.? And before you raise your eyebrows at pumpkin in your chili, let me ease your mind.? The only thing the pumpkin does is add a velvety creaminess and richness to your chili.? You can't taste it.? If you have a picky eater at home, just don't tell them that there is pumpkin in it, they'll never know.?

I ate this when I was on my strict weight lifting diet.? It has plenty of protein and fiber and is absolutely delicious.? Be sure to enjoy a big comforting bowl when the weather cools!

Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE (Sprint)

It's been a long time since Sprint's had a great keyboarded smartphone. The Motorola Admiral??was pretty good, but the BlackBerry-style keyboard and push-to-talk capabilities weren't for everyone. And the Samsung Epic 4G?paired a top-notch smartphone with a big, comfortable keyboard, but that was more than two years ago. Enter the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE. It's got a killer keyboard, a fast dual-core processor, and support for Sprint's brand new 4G LTE network. It's kind of huge, but it's the best keyboarded smartphone on Sprint, and well worthy of our Editors' Choice award.

Design, Call Quality, and Network
The Photon Q looks like a cross between the original Motorola Photon 4G, and the Motorola Droid 4??over on Verizon Wireless. It measures 5 by 2.6 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs a hefty six ounces. Most good keyboarded phones are packing some extra bulk, but it's something to consider when making your decision. Luckily, a lot of that extra weight is put to good use in the Photon Q's absolutely fabulous slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Essentially the same as the one you'll find on the Verizon Droid 4, the five-row keyboard on the Photon Q is going to make many typists very happy. The rubbery, laser-cut keys are well-separated, ultra-tactile, and brightly backlit. I love the row of number keys up at the top, as well as the directional pad and the Caps Lock key. Simply put, this is the phone to get if you like to message more than talk. And that's a good thing, since the Photon Q doesn't boast the best call quality?more on that in a minute.

Sprint isn't making too much fuss over it, but the Photon Q is ULE Platinum Certification, which is the highest level of environmental performance recognized by sustainable requirements established by UL Environment and Sprint. So it's also a good choice if you're looking to make an environmentally conscious decision. It's also splash proof, though you shouldn't go taking it in the shower.

The display is an increasingly standard (for Motorola, anyway) 4.3-inch, 960-by-540 LCD panel. It's not nearly as impressive as the 4.8-inch high-res behemoth of a screen on the Samsung Galaxy S III, but it looks bright and sharp enough to satisfy most users.

The Photon Q is a world phone that supports Sprint's brand new 4G LTE network as well as its much slower 3G network. It also supports tri-band (850/1900/2100 MHz) HSPA+21 and quad-band (850/900/1800/1900) EDGE for international calling. Unfortunately, you can't swap out the built-in SIM card while travelling, so you'll be stuck paying some pretty pricey rates while abroad.

In this year's?Fastest Mobile Networks?tests we found Sprint's 3G network to be the slowest of the nationwide networks. We also got a chance to test Sprint's 4G LTE network and found it to be a vast improvement. Unfortunately, it's only available in a limited number of cities right now, so chances are you'll be stuck with significantly slower speeds until it comes to your town.

Sprint LTE is not yet available in New York City, where we tested the Photon Q, so all of our tests were conducted over 3G. Reception was fine, though call quality just mediocre. Voices sound fuzzy in the phone's earpiece and a little harsh, especially at louder volumes. Transmissions through the mic let through some background noise, and voices tend to crackle. The phone paired easily with my?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset?and the Motorola voice command system worked fine. The Photon Q uses Bluetooth 4.0, which allows various smart watches and fitness devices to communicate with the phone. The speakerphone sounds fine, but isn't loud enough to use outdoors. And despite the large 1785mAh battery, talk time was just average at 6 hours and 59 minutes.

Processor and Apps
The Photon Q is powered by the same 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor as the Galaxy S III. That means it's packing plenty of power for absolutely anything, from casual social networking to super high-end gaming. It shouldn't have trouble running any of the 500,000+ apps in the Google Play store.

Salutations everyone!

Hello there!

My name is Meg and recently I've been craving a little more role playing than I've been getting. Prior to joining this site I've been role playing exclusively with my boyfriend of almost 2 years. Unfortunately he isn't the die-hard RP fan that I am, so I've been looking to fill in that little hole of my creative heart that could only be satisfied by role playing.

Little back story: I started role playing when I was 12 years old. I've been interested in writing and creating (via art or any medium I can use) my whole life. Role playing really provided a wonderful creative outlet. Now at 21 I feel the need to satisfy that craving. (When I said little back story, I really meant little.)

Things I love to role play include:

      Action
      Adventure
      Fantasy
      Apocalyptic
      Post-Apocalyptic
      Drama
      Horror
      Science-Fiction
      Superhero
      Futuristic

Things I will note be role playing include:
Romance (Anything past flirting is something I will not do under any circumstance.)
      Religious

Favorite stories, topics, characters or plots that I'd love to role play:
      Vampire (oh-so-cliche)
      Supernatural
      Falling Skies
      The Hunger Games
      The House of Night
      Teen Wolf
      (guilty pleasure of mine)
      Werewolf
      The Walking Dead
      Left 4 Dead 2
      Super/Inhuman powers

Anyway, thank you for your time! I'm excited to get started. :)

These viruses usually target the important software programs that run the whole computer. When these important programs are infected with the software virus, the program usually fails to do its task.

The hardware of the computer mainly consists of the monitor, keyboard, mouse, video card, hard disk and all the other physical parts of the computer. picturing_food: Chocolate Cheesecake Brownies

Everything?s been a little bit stressful and crazy lately. The Husband has been working especially hard an has been completely exhausted, so I thought I?d bake him a little something to cheer him up.

These are a complete comfort food: dense, rich, gooey chocolate brownies studded with milk chocolate chunks and marbled with swirls of velvety cream cheese. It?s like two desserts in one! Try to resist. Seriously.

choccheesecakebrownie

Recipe and lots and lots of step-by-step pictures on my blog, Cloudberry Dreams.

Otherwise, the recipe alone is

CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE BROWNIES

225g dark chocolate (70%)

225g butter

2 eggs

2 egg yolks

100g brown sugar

100g caster sugar

170g plain flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

pinch of salt

100g milk chocolate

For the cheesecake swirl:

200g cream cheese

2 tablespoons caster sugar

1 egg

1. Grease and line a square cake tin and set aside, then preheat the oven to 160 degrees Celsius (that?s 325 degrees Fahrenheit or Gas Mark 3).

2. Break the dark chocolate into pieces and melt with the butter, either in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of water or in the microwave, until all the lumps are gone and the mixture is smooth and silky. If microwaving, do so in thirty second blasts, stirring between each zap in the microwave.

3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the 2 eggs, both the egg yolks, the caster sugar and the brown sugar with a stand mixer or handheld beaters until the mixture becomes thick and is the colour of light toffee.

4. Pour the melted chocolate mixture into the egg mixture, and gently fold together to avoid the mixture congealing.

5. Sieve together the flour, baking powder and salt and fold into the chocolate mixture.

6. Break up the milk chocolate into pieces/chunks and gently fold into the brownie mixture.

7. To make the cheesecake mixture, beat together the cream cheese, caster sugar and the egg with electric beaters or a stand mixer in a new bowl for 1 -2 minutes until thick and creamy.

8. Pour half of the brownie mixture into the prepared tin.

9. Dollop spoonfuls of the cream cheese mixture over the brownie batter.

10. Pour the remaining brownie batter over the cream cheese dollops.

11. Spoon more of the cheesecake mixture over the top of the brownie batter in large dollops and marble using a flat bladed knife.

12. Bake for 28 -30 minutes, until the cream cheese swirls have started to firm up. Allow to cool in the tin for approximately 2 hours before turning out the brownie and cutting it into squares.

13. Store in an airtight container ? though I have to say, I don?t think these will be sticking around for long!

Twitter set to become the newest addition to the Linux Foundation

The Linux Foundation?s been racking up big-name brands since its early days, and one of the latest is mostly everyone?s favorite rapid-blogging service, otherwise more commonly known as Twitter. Following in the steps of chip-maker NVIDIA and that Platinum-leveled Samsung, the Blue Bird recently announced it?ll be joining the open-source association come next week, with the official revelation set to take place in a few days at the LinuxCon North American gathering in California. Twitter?s Manager of Open Source, Chris Aniszczyk, says that by doing so ?we can support an organization that is important to us and collaborate with a community that is advancing Linux as fast as we are improving Twitter.? Needless to say, this is a win-win situation for all parties involved.

8 worst Windows 8 annoyances; how to fix them

11 hrs.

All new?operating systems have a learning curve, but due to its unique blend of new and old interfaces, Windows 8?s is particularly steep. Whether it?s a menu system that forces you change screens to launch an app or a pair of dueling control panels that each contain different settings, you often have to work harder to perform the same tasks as in Windows 7. Though you can?t solve all these issues on your own ? the Start button is gone for good ? you can make the most of Windows 8 with these tips.

1. No more Start menu

Multitasking in Windows 8 is like dating Sybil. Because there's no more Start menu, users are encouraged to leave the desktop environment and go to the Modern UI Start screen, just to launch other desktop apps that take you right back to the desktop. Not only does switching screens take more time than simply launching a menu, it takes you out of context by pushing your work in the first application off-screen, making it easy to lose track of what you were doing.

Fortunately, there are several ways to avoid going through the Start screen to launch desktop apps. You can install a third-party Start menu, create keyboard shortcuts or pin applications to the taskbar.

Read More: How to Launch Apps from The Desktop in Windows 8

2. Switcher Groups All Desktop Apps Into Just One Thumbnail

If?you want proof that desktop applications are second-class citizens in Windows 8, look no further than the Switcher menu where you'll find separate thumbnails for all of your open Windows 8 applications. The entire desktop gets just one thumbnail, though, no matter how many different programs are running on it.

if you want to find to a program that's running on the desktop, you must navigate from the Switcher menu back to the desktop and look at the windows or taskbar there, a huge waste of time and mental energy.

The good news is that you can switch between all of your tasks using the good old-fashioned ALT Tab key combination. Also, if you dock the desktop next to your primary app in the Metro UI, you'll see a list of tiles representing all of your open desktop apps.

Read More: How to Switch Tasks Faster in Windows 8

3. You Must Slide Away the Lock Screen Before Logging In

Sometimes it seems like Windows 8 was designed to make orthopedists rich, because the new OS asks PC users to perform so many unnecessary clicks and mouse gestures. The most blatant waste of time and muscle movement is caused by the cutesy lock screen that you must close by either dragging it offscreen or clicking on it (the faster method) every time you boot or wake your computer.

Tablet users may like to see the weather and time when their devices are inactive, but on PCs, the display is nothing more than a giant roadblock that stands between you and your login prompt.

Fortunately, you can make the lock screen disappear permanently. Just enable the "Do not display lock screen" setting in the under Computer Configuration > Administrative Tools > Control Panel > Personalization in the Local Group Policy editor.

Read More: How to Disable the Windows 8 Lock Screen: Step-by-Step

4. The Power Button is One Gesture and Three Clicks Away

Since Microsoft designed Windows 8 with the world of always-on tablets in mind, the company thinks you'll need to shut down and restart so rarely that these functions are buried in the menu structure. In Windows 7, the Shut Down button is displayed prominently on the Start menu, whereas in Windows 8, the suggested method is to pull out the Charms menu, click the Settings charm, click the Power button and then select Shut Down from a menu.

If you don't have time and shoulder muscles to waste, you can create your own shortcuts for both the Shut Down and Restart functions. Just assign the shortcuts to the command-line commands "shutdown /s /t 0" (shutdown) and "shutdown /r /t 0" (restart), respectively. Be sure to pin these shortcuts to the Start screen and taskbar for easy access.

Read More: How to Shutdown Windows 8 In Just One Click

5. Windows Mail Doesn't Support POP Accounts

Many ISPs give users POP email accounts, but Windows 8's built-in mail app not only doesn't support POP connections, it actively disses POP users. The first time you open Windows Mail, if the program doesn't recognize your login email address as Outlook or Hotmail.com, it asks you if that address is POP, IMAP or Exchange. If you select POP, it rudely tells you that Mail doesn't support POP3 accounts and that you should get an IMAP or Exchange account instead.

You can, of course, use a different mail client, but if you want to stick with Windows Mail there's a simple solution. Set up your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Gmail account to check your POP mail and then add that account to Windows Mail. In Outlook.com, the option to send/receive mail from a POP account is listed under the More Mail Settings menu.

Read More: How to Read POP Mail in Windows 8

6. Secondary Users Cannot Install Applications

One of Windows 8's selling points is its ability to handle multiple users. However, when you add users to your Windows 8 device, by default they aren't given permission to install desktop software on their own. Though they can install Windows 8 Metro-style apps to their heart's content, secondary users are asked for an administrator's password as soon as they launch a desktop installer.

Even after an administrator enters his or her password, Windows 8 installs the program but, in our experience, fails to put a shortcut on the secondary user's desktop, on the Start screen or on the All Apps menu. The only way for the secondary user to launch his new app is to find its .exe file in the Program Files folder and create a shortcut from that. Don't try that at home.

Fortunately, it's fairly easy to grant administrative privileges to a secondary user, provided that you know which menu to use. After adding a user in the PC settings menu, go into the desktop control panel and click Manage Another Account, select the name of the new account and then click Change Account Type and select Administrator from the menu.

Read More: How to Add a User the Right Way in Windows 8

7. Tablet Users Need to Enter the Desktop for Key Functions

Though Microsoft focused the Modern UI on touch, it still forces users back to the desktop for such basic operations as file management and controlling the screen resolution or the user permissions (see annoyance #6). So any time a tablet user attaches a USB flash drive and wants to copy files from it, he will need to use Windows Explorer on the desktop.

Microsoft should have made all of its built-in apps ?? especially Windows Explorer and Control Panel ?? work in Modern UI, but tablet users can address this problem by making the icons on their desktop as large and finger-friendly as possible. Simply right click on the desktop, select Screen Resolution, click "Make text and other items larger or smaller" and adjust as necessary.

8. ?Bing Search App Opens Results in Another App

With its vibrant photographs of landscapes and its image-heavy tile results, Microsoft's built-in Bing Search app provides a more attractive interface for performing Web searches than you'll find elsewhere. Unfortunately, behind the attractive facade lurks a really annoying usability problem. When you see a result you like and click on it, the Bing app sends you to Internet Explorer to view the page.

Since both Bing and IE 10 run fullscreen, some users may not notice that they have switched apps, so they'll be really confused when they hit the back button in the browser, only to find out that it does not return them to the list of Bing results. To get back where they came from, users will have to switch back to the Bing app.

The easy way to avoid this problem is to pin the Bing (or Google) websites to your Start screen and use the browser, rather than the Bing app, for all your searching needs. If you feel compelled to use the dedicated Bing app, you can dock it to the right so you can see your list of results on the side of the screen while Internet Explorer takes up most of the space.

Nuclear Decelerator: Last U.S. Particle Collider on Chopping Block

With the Tevatron in mothballs, the Brookhaven Laboratory collider now faces possible closure due to budget cutbacks

Until recently, the American particle collider was a thriving species spanning a variety of habitats from coast to coast. But now it finds itself on the endangered list.

Since 2008 the number of colliders in the U.S. has dwindled from four to one. And the last surviving member of the species, the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y., may soon fall victim to the same budgetary blight that has already felled so many other towering scientific facilities. Just last year the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) phased out the larger Tevatron collider at Fermilab in Illinois, citing fiscal constraints. The increasingly rare breed known as the collider is a particle accelerator in which two beams of high-energy particles intersect to collide head-on inside giant detectors, which allow physicists to sift through the wreckage for short-lived particles or evidence of new physical phenomena.

The RHIC collider is one of three major projects now under scrutiny as federal science agencies seek to reconcile their portfolios of physics facilities with tightening budgets. The DoE and the National Science Foundation have requested that a panel of nuclear physicists, chaired by Robert Tribble of Texas A&M University, advise the government on how to get the most science out of limited funds. It appears likely that at least one of the costly projects?either RHIC, the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Virginia or the planned Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) in Michigan?will fall victim to the cost-cutting. Any termination would cost hundreds of jobs and affect thousands of scientist users.

"The three of these things ? they can't all fit within the budgets that the DoE has been told to anticipate for the next five years or so," says Steven Vigdor, associate laboratory director for nuclear and particle physics at Brookhaven. "It's conceivable, but I think it's a long shot, that there's a compromise solution that doesn't involve terminating something."

The RHIC collider, with a staff of about 750, could provide the biggest target for cost-cutters. Its operation costs the DoE roughly $170 million annually. But RHIC is also the only facility of the three that is currently in operation, and it seems to be hitting its peak, having recently been upgraded. RHIC rams protons or heavy nuclei from gold, copper or uranium atoms together at nearly light speed to investigate what produces the proton's spin as well as the universe's composition in the earliest instants after the big bang. The high-speed collisions of heavy ions produce a nearly frictionless fluid called a quark?gluon plasma, a hot bouillabaisse of the fundamental particles that form the heart of all atoms. Quark?gluon plasma was first produced at RHIC in 2005, and scientists there are now working to explore at which temperatures the quarks and gluons freeze out from their fluid state into protons and neutrons.

Like the other two facilities, RHIC comes highly recommended by nuclear physics advisory groups. A 2012 report by the National Research Council identified the completed RHIC upgrade, and an ongoing upgrade at Jefferson Lab, as strategic investments whose exploitation "should be an essential component of the U.S. nuclear science program for the next decade."

The Tribble panel operates under the auspices of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC), which provides guidance to the federal funding agencies. Tribble's subcommittee will meet in Maryland over four days in early September, during which time representatives of the various facilities will have an opportunity to lobby for their projects. "We and the other laboratories are taking this really seriously in the sense of a threat to our continued operation, and for FRIB to their continued construction," Vigdor says.

All you need to do is just sear the meat pieces and chop up the vegetables to finally throw them all in the crock pot to cook them. So, if you are not feeling like putting in much effort to cook the dinner after a tiring day, you can easily whip up this crock pot beef stew recipe.

Difficulty level- Easy
Servings per recipe- 4-6
Preparation time required- 25-30 minutes
Cooking time required- 4 ? -8 hours

Required ingredients

2 lbs. of beef stew meat
? cup of red wine
2-3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
2 small bay leaves, fresh or dried
1 large onion, peeled and cut into bite sized pieces
3 carrots, peeled and cut into bite sized pieces
2 tomatoes, cut into bite sized pieces
1 teaspoon of fresh thyme, chopped
1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon of olive oil
2 stalks of celery, cut into bite sized pieces
? cup of canned whole tomatoes
? lb. of potatoes, peeled and cut into bite sized pieces
? cup of frozen or fresh peas
1 teaspoon of fresh basil, chopped
2 large cloves of garlic, peeled and minced
1 teaspoon of fresh rosemary, chopped
1 cup of low sodium beef broth
Salt, to taste
2 tablespoons of tomato paste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Required Utensils

1 crockpot
1 stirring spoon
1 skillet
1 tong
1 knife
1 colander

Method of preparation

1. ?Put the carrots, onion, celery stalks and the tomatoes into a colander and then transfer the colander into the sink. Then rinse each of the vegetables separately until they are thoroughly cleaned. Once done, give a few shakes to the colander to drain all the excess water out of it and then place it on your counter.

Now take out the carrots and peel them one by one. Once done, slice the carrots into thick pieces and then cut the sliced pieces in half. Next, take the onion and cut it in half. Peel off the skin of the onion and then cut it into large chunks, just like the carrots.

2. ?Follow that by cutting the tomatoes into big wedges as well. Cut the potatoes into large chunks. Finally, take the celery stalks and cut them into big chunks. Once everything is ready, take the meat and trim off streaks of fat from it if you want. Then cut the meat into 1-inch sized pieces. Once done, take a skillet or saut? pan and place it on the stove. Turn the knob to light up the flame and then set it on medium. Wait for the oil to heat up and then put the beef cubes into the pan.

3. ?Season the beef pieces with a pinch of freshly ground black pepper and salt. Make sure that you sear the beef pieces in one layer as all the beef cubes must come in direct contact with the pan.

Let the beef pieces sear undisturbed for 4-5 minutes or until they develop a nice brown color. Once that happens, flip the beef pieces to sear the other sides as well. Sear the beef pieces nicely on all sides and then fish them out of the skillet. Place the beef cubes on a separate plate and then throw some of the onion cubes into the skillet.

4. ?Saut? the onions for 4-5 minutes and then set them aside on a plate. Next, put the minced garlic into the skillet and saut? it for 1-2 minutes. Once the garlic is saut?ed, add the tomato paste to the garlic and then saut? the mixture for another 1 minute. Once the time elapses, pour the red wine into the pot to deglaze the pan. Scrape up the brown bits from the bottom of the pan and then let the mixture simmer for 1-2 minutes or until it starts bubbling.

5. ?Once that happens, remove the skillet from the stove and turn off the flame. Next, put the seared beef pieces into the crock pot and add the saut?ed onions and the sauce to it. Then sprinkle the flour all over the beef pieces. Stir the mixture to dissolve the flour into the cooking liquid and then season the mixture with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Follow that by adding the bay leaves, fresh basil, fresh thyme, fresh rosemary and the whole tomatoes.

6. ?Give a brief stir to the mixture and then add-in the potatoes, carrots, peas, onions, celery and the tomato wedges to the rest of the ingredients in the crock pot. Finally, pour the beef broth over the mixture and give a brief stir to let the broth seep down to the bottom of the crock pot.

Once done, put the lid on the crock pot and cook the stew for 4-5 hours on high or 8-9 hours on low or until the beef pieces turn very tender. Once done, ladle out the stew in individual serving bowls and serve with warm rice or mashed potatoes.

Tips

1.? ?It is very important to let the beef sear on all sides very nicely.
2.? ?You can also add a little cayenne pepper powder to add a little spiciness to the dish.
3.? ?You can either cook the stew for 4 hours on high or for 8 hours on low.
4.?? Fresh tomato stew can also be used instead of canned tomatoes.
