Risk Management Programs Essential to Ag's Continued Viability

TORONTO, JULY 26: At CFA?s Semi-Annual Meeting, farm leaders from across the country heard from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada?officials on changes to business risk management programs and highlighted their concerns.
Recent information has come to light suggesting that on-going Federal/Provincial/Territorial Ministerial (FPT) negotiations on business risk management (BRM) programming are considering an annual reduction to current FPT BRM spending levels, with significant cuts to a key program ? AgriStability.

CFA and its members believe the development of Growing Forward 2 is an opportunity to resolve specific issues and gaps that exist within current BRM programming and should not be viewed as an opportunity for wholesale, budget-motivated programming cuts. Current Business Risk Management programs and their associated coverage levels represent a risk sharing relationship agreed to by both industry and government, with industry already exposed to the maximum level of risk under which Canadian agriculture can sufficiently ensure future viability.
